I was feeling a little mischievous today so I did some research with Google trends. This came about because some idiot with potatoes for brains said that email marketing was dead and it had been killed by Facebook marketing…
Look at the chart below…
I admit, back in 2013 it looked like Facebook was taking over the world but their inability to act like a responsible company seems to have put paid to that!
If you look at the chart below which reflects Google searches for email marketing and Facebook marketing, it shows email marketing maintaining a steady level of interest while Facebook is veering around like a drunk on a pogo stick. At this moment in time, email marketing is sitting on top. Yay!
Look, I admit you can find supporting stats for any argument, but I think this definitely proves that email marketing is not dead and it certainly wasn’t killed by Facebook (unlike thousands of marketers’ businesses).
However, it’s Friday afternoon so I decided to take it further and pitch my favorite type of marketing – content marketing – against several other more established marketing methods.
Article Marketing vs Content Marketing
How about if we take the darling of the mid 2000s, article marketing, and pitch it against content marketing…
No contest. Article marketing looks to be on its death bed with content marketing soaring like eagle. Yay again! (and that’s from someone who has had over 1,000,000 views on E zine articles!)
Affiliate Marketing vs Content Marketing
This result really surprised me. Content marketing has over taken affiliate marketing in the past year. Looking at the chart, affiliate marketing had a steady rise through to 2009 and then started to decline until 2013 where it has held steady for the past 2 years.
Finally, what would happen if we compared all 5?
Undoubtedly Facebook marketing and email marketing are still kings of the hill. However, content marketing is the only marketing method on a steady upward trajectory. I’ll look at this again next year and see how things have changed.Content Marketing is the only marketing method on a steady upward trajectory. Click To Tweet
One of the methods I use is Facebook ads to drive readers to good quality content. From there, they are put onto an email list where I can provide more value.
This has been a little bit of Friday afternoon fun, I love stats. As my friends will tell you, I rarely enter an argument unless I have stats to back up my position.
Let me know what you think in the comments or if you think I missed something…
Have a great weekend.
